The Idea:
Wavelets are short wave-like functions that can be scaled and translated. Wavelet transforms take any signal and express it in terms of scaled and translated wavelets. The resulting wavelet transform is a representation of the signal at different scales. The transform allows you to manipulate features at different scales independently, such as suppressing or strengthening some particular feature.
The idea behind the piece is that the work can be constructed by an accumulation of different wave files, in this case existing recordings, music pieces and electronic sounds. This work this entirely constructed of existing material that has been altered, time stretched, pitched, cut-up and collaged.
The piece comes as a combination of an audio project with the existing sound files and a graphic score. The score is basically a representation of the sound files arranged in time. The approach to play this piece is to go through the piece and the different wavelets and consider which of these can be played by the players. These sound files can either be muted, reduced in volume, or left as they are. The aim is to create a sound world that is inspired by the existing sound files. They don't have to be recreated in a perfect manner and it can be decided which of the original files are still left on playing. Several approaches are possible and the combination of the wave files and the players playing can in some sections be good, in other sections it might be necessary to mute or turn down some of the wavelets in order not to have a too full spectrum.
